Carers
If you are caring for somebody in your household (other than your partner or a child under the age of 18) then the person(s) responsible for paying the Council Tax could be eligible for a discount.
How do I apply?

What is the discount for carers?
- If you meet the qualifying conditions as a carer, you will no longer be counted towards the number of adults living in the property for Council Tax purposes.
- If the number of adults that we do count is reduced to one, we can award a 25% discount on the Council Tax bill.
- If all the adults in the property are not counted, we can award a 50% discount on the Council Tax bill.
Do I qualify?
To be counted as a carer and qualify for this discount you must provide care for another household resident, for a minimum of 35 hours per week.
You cannot claim this discount if you are caring for your partner, or a child under the age of 18.
The person receiving care must also receive one of the following benefits:
- Attendance Allowance
- The highest or middle rate of the care component of Disability Living Allowance
- The standard or enhanced rate of Daily Living Component of the Personal Independence Payment
- An Increase in Constant Attendance Allowance under the Industrial Injuries or War Pensions scheme
- The highest rate of Constant Attendance Allowance payable on top of full rate Disablement Benefit paid for an industrial injury.
It is possible for more than one adult to be counted as caring for the same person, provided all the conditions set out above are met.
For example, two parents could be caring for an adult son or daughter.
What happens next?
You should continue to pay the instalments shown on the Council Tax bill until a decision is made.
We will check that you are eligible for the discount and if the Council Tax is reduced, a new bill will be issued. If you are due a refund of Council Tax you have already paid, this will be arranged.
