A Conservation Area was first designated by Devon County Council on 6 February 1973, it was later reduced in size on 3 October 1985 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971, (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act 1974).
It was Appraised on 20 December 2001 under Sections 69 and 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, Variation of Conservation Area Boundaries. (LC Ref: 3/A27).
