Flooding can happen at any time of the year, and is an increasing concern for residents and businesses. This section includes information on how to protect your home or what to do if you are flooded.
What steps should I take to prepare for flooding?
You can check if your property is in a Flood Risk Zone using the Environment Agency Flood Map. This map is designed for planning applications, but can be used for existing properties.

Floodline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can speak to a trained operator who can offer immediate advice on flood risk, and what to do before, during and after a flood.

How can I report a flooding problem?
For any serious flooding, or where lives are at risk, please call the emergency services by dialling 999.
Flooding in the road that has been caused by blocked drains or gullies can be reported to Devon County Council Highways on their website.
How can I prepare for bad weather?
- Make sure you have emergency contact information for your insurer, local authority and utility companies to hand, and in a safe waterproof place.
- Listen out for bad weather warnings on TV, radio and social media.
- Check the Environment Agency Flood map and sign up for flood alerts from them.
- If you have a car, move it away from where flooding is expected.
- Check that it is safe to use electricity, gas and water supplies.
- Make sure that garden items, such as furniture and trampolines, are secured.
- Obtain a supply of sandbags.
