Struggling to Pay Business Rates

Why is the debt passed to the Enforcement Agent?

If your debt with us has been passed to the Enforcement Agent, it is because, despite the issue of reminders to you, your account remains in arrears. The Council has now obtained a Liability Order against you (or your Business) from the Magistrates' Court and has passed your debt to the Council's Enforcement Agent.

The Liability Order gives the Council greater powers to collect the outstanding debt such as using of an enforcement company.

To get to this stage you will already have been sent:

  • A bill
  • At least one reminder
  • A court summons

You have then either not contacted us about any of the above, or you have not kept up to date with an arrangement we made with you to clear your debt.

I want to make a payment

Now that we have passed your debt to the Enforcement Agent, you must make any payments to them, until your debt with them is cleared. You may receive a bill for the subsequent year's charge whilst you are still paying the Enforcement Agent for previous arrears. You can pay this bill in the normal way.
