South Hams is a special place

Support businesses in the South Hams this Christmas.

What makes your high street the best place to visit at Christmas? Is it the friendly, personal service from the staff or the range of artisan and festive goods on the shelves? Perhaps it's the bustling atmosphere, Christmas lights or vibrant markets on offer. Whatever the appeal, snap up something special South Hams' style. #MyPlace

In a district-wide campaign, working in partnership with South Hams' Town Councils, South Hams District Council is encouraging residents to celebrate all that is special about the District's high streets this Christmas. Part-funded by the Government's Welcome Back Fund, the campaign aims to help businesses bounce back from the Covid pandemic by encouraging residents and visitors to shop on the local high streets.

This season there are wide-ranging festivities including Christmas light switch-ons, markets, Santa's Grottos and even a glittering ice rink to enjoy with the family.

Not forgetting the countless incredible shops decked ready for the festive season within your local towns and villages. There are a wide range of prices and gifts on offer to meet every shopper's needs when buying presents, especially if working on a budget.

Are you searching for a different type of gift? If so, after shopping in your own town, why not visit further afield to experience what neighbouring towns have to offer. Each town offers a unique and special shopping experience. Wherever you choose to visit, you can explore a fantastic variety of local retailers selling specialist foods, art, clothes, ethical goods, handmade items, vintage, antiques and DIY.

Wander the cheerfully lit streets and you will soon tick off items on your Christmas shopping list.

South Hams' shopkeepers pride themselves in their product knowledge that you simply can't find when shopping online. As a bonus, you don't have to return unsuitable gifts that aren't quite right when they arrive because they don't look like the picture online! You also have the added benefit of cutting down on cardboard packaging too! While you're out soaking up the Districts' festive atmosphere, don't forget to drift in for delicious food and drinks from the host of fabulous caf├ęs, restaurants and bars on offer within the South Hams.

Cllr Hilary Bastone, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Economy for South Hams District Council, said: "There are so many wonderful Christmas events happening across the District and it's really fantastic to see them happening this year.

"We're very fortunate to have an eclectic mix of special towns in the South Hams which are truly unique in their own way. They all look beautiful at Christmas so even if you have your presents sorted, still go and support the events, visit the ice rink, have a drink and enjoy a lovely Christmas visit.

"I'd really love it if residents can continue to get behind our businesses, as they have over the past difficult few years, and support them as much as possible and buy local. Businesses have had a tough time and they continue to need our help to help get them through the pandemic and back on their feet, so we need to do what we can to support their livelihoods. There is so much choice our there for all price ranges and all tastes."

As the pandemic continues to take its toll and with cases again rising, shoppers may be uneasy about busy shops.  Many shops still have measures in place with hand sanitisers, some one-way systems continue and social distancing to ensure your safety. South Hams District Council continues to work closely with businesses. To keep yourself, and others, safe by wearing a face covering in crowded and enclosed settings; get tested, and self-isolate if you test positive or feel unwell and wash your hands regularly to help avoid spreading the virus.

You can also just pop along to any of the towns and have a wonderful Christmas experience, but don't forget to tell your friends and family too.
