A letter to Residents from the Leader of the Council
25 June 2021
I would like to offer you my sincere apologies for any disruption you may have experienced in recent weeks, after our contractors FCC Environmental began rolling out our new recycling service.
We know for many of you that this has caused considerable distress and inconvenience.
The Council is putting every available resource into sorting out this problem. We are now confident that the present solution will assure you get a regular recycling collection, albeit temporarily not exactly as planned. Unfortunately this will mean that you will have to put food waste in your black bins until further notice and that this will therefore go for incineration.
I know that your local Councillors have been heavily involved in responding to your concerns. This week I have also asked that senior officers of the Council come out to your communities, to listen to residents' concerns and help to communicate what we are doing to put this right.
FCC's main focus this week is to collect all the outstanding recycling. In some areas, this means sending out a vehicle that will co-mingle all the recycling materials in one compartment.
I can guarantee that all this will get sorted at a local facility and will be sent to be recycled and that nothing will go to landfill or incineration.
We shall keep the pressure on our contractors to deliver this service as it should have been delivered. We have seen across Devon, in other authority areas, and now in parts of the South Hams, that when this new system works, it works really well.
We have seen how it can reduce the amount of waste that goes to the incinerator, increase the quantity and quality of materials to be recycled and provide you as residents with more opportunities to recycle more at home.
I can only apologise again for how wrong this roll out has gone in your area, and I am confident that in time we can provide you with the Devon Aligned Service from which others areas already benefit.
Please do continue to separate your recycling, and as soon as we are able to get you back on the new kerbside scheme we will.
You will be able to find updates on our website at www.southhams.gov.uk/waste-service-updates and on our social media feeds, as we have them.
Thank you for your continued patience.
