Each year thousands of tourists flock to the South Hams to enjoy our lovely countryside and stunning beaches and last week South Hams District Council were looking at ways to benefit from this, by creating 7 or 8 beach hut style chalets in Beesands.
The proposal which has been talked about for some time, could see a further £144,000 added to the local economy from additional visitors spending money locally, as well as provide a small income for the Council.
Cllr John Tucker, Leader of South Hams District Council Said: "I really like this idea, it is investing in the local economy and enabling our council to benefit from tourism. I also like idea of providing traditional old fashioned holiday accommodation, it's a real draw for people from outside of our area.
"I think this also demonstrates to local residents that we have and will continue to, explore many different ways to support the local economy of our towns and villages. In the same way that we explore all options when look at our own budget challenges."
If the scheme is granted planning permission, the Council also hopes to provide a new play park and has promised the Town Council that they will explore ways that they can continue to provide public toilets in the area.
