South Hams District Council is launching a consultation on proposed increases to parking charges across the district.

Following initial consultation with local Parish and Town Councils, it was recommended to the council at the Executive Meeting on 26 April that parking charges should be amended in accordance with each community's needs.

Cllr Rufus Gilbert, Executive Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services at South Hams District Council, said: "For many years, SHDC has had a community-led policy for parking charges, which allows for local town and parish councils, as well as other stakeholders, to work with the council to make recommendations about parking charges. This means we can design charges to meet the needs of individual communities.

"In most cases, this has meant a small increase to charges in line with inflation. Other areas have more specific needs - in Dartmouth, for instance, charges have increased for the town centre to encourage greater use of the park and ride facility and reduce congestion in the town. Likewise, to try and address concerns of overnight camping in motorhomes at Slapton, the overnight charge has been recommended to increase to £5.00"

In addition to the changes to the Pay and Display tariffs, the council also received a recommendation to incorporate eight newly created parking bays at Batson Creek, Salcombe. These are reserved bays and have already been allocated, generating £1,500 per bay each year, which will be reinvested into car park services, street cleansing and public toilets in line with council policy.

The public consultation starts on 7 June 2018 and will run for 21 days. Residents and car park users can send comments and suggestions to ParkingConsultation@swdevon.gov.uk.
