Performance Indicators

Performance Indicators

Each authority has a statutory duty to collect data on a set of National Indicators (NIs) which measure local authority performance in a number of areas (introduced April 2008). NIs will be reported to the Communities and Local Government to check that authorities have adhered to the guidance which could result in external assessment - as part of the Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA).

National Indicators replace the previous requirement to collect data on Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPIs). On an annual basis (July) the authority will publish a table of how the council has performed on the NIs and in addition a selection of BVPIs which were considered to still be of relevance.

In addition each service area use and monitor performance indicators/measures to help inform on service performance. This is an important element of understanding where there are areas of underperformance which could have a negative impact on the delivery of the service or have an impact on the reputation of the authority. A selection of performance indicators are discussed at team meetings every month, Strategic Management Team every month, Scrutiny and Overview every 3 months. Reports which are presented to committee are available to view through the committee minutes.

Data Quality Strategy - the Council produces a vast amount of data in the support and operation of its services and strives to produce quality data at all times. The purpose of this strategy is to outline an approach to improving and maintaining data quality across the Council. It is important that data is accurate, reliable and timely in informing service provision and in supporting good decision-making.
