As well as planning permission, you may need building regulations approval, so check on this before you start work. In many cases, planning permission may not be required, but building regulation approval could be. The Planning Portal

The Planning Portal is intended to be the first point of call for anyone who wants to find out about the planning system in England and Wales. It can help you find out if planning permission is required; has handy calculation tools and a satellite dish locator; and when/if you have found out you require planning permission you are able to Apply On-Line if you wish.
