New Sustainable Community Strategy

Following the consultation activities "Shaping the future of the South Hams" held during summer 2005 and further public consultation during summer 2006 a new Sustainable Community Strategy for the South Hams has been developed and adopted by the South Hams Strategic Partnership.

The new strategy has the overarching aim to improve the well being of the people of the South Hams in a sustainable way and sets the vision for organisations delivering services across the district for the next 5 years.

The new Sustainable Community Strategy was adopted by South Hams District Council on the 16th November 2006 and the remaining strategic partners are in the process of adopting the strategy within their organisations. The real work on delivering the strategy's action plans is already underway with working groups meeting every 6-8 weeks. The wider community are kept informed of progress towards delivering the Sustainable Community Strategy via a quarterly newsletter and a biannual Community Partnership Forum event.

It was put together following extensive involvement of local communities over a two year period and it represented one of the first times that key agencies working across the South Hams had come together to plan and deliver services based on local needs i.e. the South Hams Strategic Partnership.

Achievements linked to the first Community Strategy include:

  • Village Halls have been helped to improve their disabled access and facilities
  • A Rural Housing Enabler post was created
  • A business information guide was developed
  • A Transport Research and Development Officer post was created to support and develop sustainable transport solutions across the district
