Over 50% of household rubbish can be composted.
Composting at home using a bin or heap is the best option for the environment and your garden.
Composting is the natural process of decomposition of organic materials into a humus, known as compost. Any natural product that was once alive can be composted, although it is best not to put any cooked food, meat or fish into a home compost heap or bin, as this may attract vermin.
To make good quality compost it is best to get a good balance between carbon rich materials such as wood shavings or shredded paper and nitrogen rich materials such as grass clippings, weeds and vegetable peelings. Once you have made your compost you can use it in the garden instead of purchasing peat based compost. This will help to put natural nutrients into your soil and save you money.
You can also use a wormery to compost food waste.
As well as composting at home, you can compost using the brown wheeled bin.
