What Goes Into the Black Sacks?
Only properties that aren't suitable for wheeled bins can use black sacks to leave their waste for collection.
Approximately 20% of domestic properties in the South Hams are not suitable for wheeled bins, this can be for one of a number of reasons including having nowhere to store the bins, having more than six steps to bring the bins up or down or because we can't access the property with the collection vehicle needed to empty the wheeled bins.
Properties that use black sacks for their waste will have their waste collected every week and will receive a fortnightly collection of the blue and clear recycling sacks.
Because we can't offer a composting collection to properties that have a black sack collection, any food waste should be put in the black sacks. We will also accept a small amount of garden waste (up to one sack per household per week), but this will be landfilled, not composted. You may wish to compost your food and garden waste at home instead or you can take garden waste to a recycling centre.
If you don't have wheeled bins at your property but would like them, please contact us and we will advise you if this is possible or not.
