In 2007 - 2008 South Hams residents recycled and composted more than 57% of their household waste, giving the South Hams the second highest recycling and composting rate in the country.

During 2007 - 2008 people in the district recycled over 6350 tonnes of paper and cardboard; over 320 tonnes of plastic; over 575 tonnes of metal and composted more than 9000 tonnes of organic waste.
