What is it?
A scheme set up by South Hams District Council to help homeless people who are on a low income and unable to house themselves because they cannot raise a deposit.
The deposit guarantee is a written guarantee by South Hams District Council to the landlord that if at the end of the tenancy there is damage to the property, South Hams District Council will reimburse the landlord up to the value of the agreed guarantee (maximum one months rent)
If a tenant defaults on their guarantee they will be recharged by the Council.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must:
- Have been accepted by South Hams District Council as homeless and be on a low income and have less than £400 savings.
- Have not previously defaulted on a deposit guarantee guarantee.
Landlords/Ladies must:
- Offer at least a six month Assured Short hold Tenancy.
- Not be resident in the property or providing bed and breakfast or board and lodgings.
- Have property which conforms to Health and Safety Standards.
