Affordable Housing Assistance

Who can apply for Affordable Housing Assistance?

Affordable Housing Assistance is available to help either (i) under 35 years old, first time buyers, local to the South Hams or (ii) key-workers.

"local to the South Hams" means:- previous residents in the district for 7 years out of the last 12 years and having permanent employment within the district

"key-workers" are for example: teachers, policemen, health-workers or others, at the discretion of the Council, who work and therefore need to live, within a specific locality.

What is Affordable Housing Assistance for?

This is to help with the cost of essential repairs to a property, to bring it up to Decent Homes Standard. The works eligible will be at the discretion of the Council.

How much would it be?

The maximum assistance, based on the cost of the works, is £25,000.

You will be assessed financially, on a sliding scale, comparing your income (joint incomes for couples) against the local average wage. The standard "means test" is not applied to this type of assistance.

Assistance will be in the form of a grant which will be repayable in full on a breach of conditions within 5 years of completion.
