Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants

If you need adaptations made to your home because you are disabled, you may qualify for a grant, particularly if you are on a low income or means tested benefit. To apply you will need to be referred by the Occupational Therapy Service at Devon County Council Social Services. An Occupational Therapist will visit you in your home to find out the problems you have and decide what adaptations you need. You can contact them on:-

  • Contact Number: 0845 1551 007
  • Fax Number: 01548 854294

For more information contact the Private Sector Housing Team on 01803 861234 or refer to the
Adobe Acrobat Document -- will open in new browser window Disabled Facilities Grant booklet from the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Who can apply?

Residents who have been referred to the South Hams Council by Social Services, where their home no longer meets their needs because of their disability.

What for?

Adaptations that the occupational therapist considers to be necessary and appropriate to meet the needs of the disabled applicant and which the Council considers are reasonable and practicable. These could include level-entry showers, stair lifts, access ramps and other alterations to make life easier at home.

How much?

A mandatory grant is available for adaptations up to a value of £25,000. If the requested adaptation is above that value the grant is discretionary. Under the Council's current policy funding above this amount will be assessed on the merits of each case. Devon Care and Repair are available to give advice and help in finding further funding where this becomes necessary.

Conditions

The statutory test of resources applies and the work requested has to be supported by the Social Services Department. The applicant must also have the power to have works done (for example if you are a tenant you have to obtain the owners permission). The Council will have the right to reclaim equipment provided under this grant scheme.
