Guide for Older People

Guide for Older People

A number of housing associations provide sheltered schemes for rent throughout the district. These comprise self contained bungalows or flats.

If you are interested in resedential or nursing care please view the Devon County Council Website.

What is sheltered housing?

Sheltered housing is provided for people over pensionable age who would like to remain independent, but feel they would appreciate the added security and reassurance that a sheltered scheme can offer. All sheltered schemes have a warden service, emergency speech alarm, and benefit from smoke detectors or fire alarm. Many also have communal lounges, laundry facilities, disabled access showers and lifts, guest rooms, and door entry systems.

What service does the warden provide?

The warden is there for those occasions when tenants may need extra help. Many tenants in sheltered housing require assistance with daily living from Social Services and Health Services. The Warden will help with arranging extra care services such as Home Care, or Meals on Wheels, or contacting a doctor if a tenant is poorly (usually in association with their family). In the event of an emergency a tenant can call the Warden via the alarm system. The Warden is fully trained to respond to emergencies which may arise in the scheme. Her normal duties do not include shopping, nursing care, collecting pensions, or paying bills. The Warden is also responsible for the supervision and management of all communal areas at the scheme. When the Warden is "off duty", usually during the evenings, holidays, and at weekends, the scheme will be automatically covered by our "Lifeline Alarm Service", but a Warden will respond to emergencies if she is in the scheme.

What is Lifeline Alarm?

The Lifeline Alarm Service is manned by specially trained and understanding staff 24 hours a day every day of the year. If a tenant pulls their emergency alarm cord when the Warden is "off duty", they can speak to someone at the Control Centre who can summon the help they need. If a tenant is unsure about how to summon assistance using this system, the Warden will be pleased to go through it with them.

What community activities are available?

A popular feature of sheltered housing are its social activities, which are initiated and encouraged by the Warden. This may include coach trips or theatre visits.

In most schemes there is also a communal lounge where a range of activities can be organised, from coffee mornings to bingo!

How do I apply for sheltered housing?

Private tenants, owner occupiers, and housing association tenants who would like to move to a rented sheltered housing scheme, should contact the Housing Advice Section for an information pack and application form.
