Guide for Older People

A number of housing associations provide sheltered schemes for rent throughout the district. These comprise self contained bungalows or flats.

If you are interested in residential or nursing care please view the Devon County Council Website.

What is sheltered housing?
Sheltered housing is self-contained accommodation provided for people over pensionable age or disabled people who require the added security and reassurance that a sheltered housing scheme can offer. It is designed for people who need the reassurance of knowing that emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day. It is ideal for people who want to live independently, while having someone close by in the case of an emergency.

Sheltered schemes have the support of a scheme co-ordinator, who is responsible for dealing effectively with day to day events at the scheme. Properties are provided with an emergency alarm unit or an integrated system which is monitored by the scheme co-ordinator during office hours and by the 24 hour Emergency Alarm Centre, Call24Hour, at all other times.

What is the role of the Scheme Co-ordinator?
During the Scheme Co-ordinators’ working hours, they will make contact with their residents, either in person or via telephone or the alarm system, to check on their wellbeing. This monitoring of a resident’s wellbeing is structured around the completion of a mutually agreed Support Plan, which is reviewed on an annual basis, or sooner should there be a need.

What is Lifeline Alarm?
The Lifeline Alarm Service is manned by specially trained and understanding staff 24 hours a day every day of the year. If a tenant pulls their emergency alarm cord when the Warden is "off duty", they can speak to someone at the Control Centre who can summon the help they need. If a tenant is unsure about how to summon assistance using this system, the Warden will be pleased to go through it with them.

What community activities are available?
A popular feature of sheltered housing are its social activities, which are initiated and encouraged by the Scheme Co-ordinator. This may include coach trips or theatre visits.

In most schemes there is also a communal lounge where a range of activities can be organised, from coffee mornings to bingo!

How do I apply for sheltered housing?
Private tenants, owner occupiers, and housing association tenants who would like to move to a rented sheltered housing scheme, should apply to Devon Home Choice, or contact the Housing Advice Team on 01803 861234 to request a paper application form.
