Recycling and composting are great ways to reduce harm to the environment but it also helps if the amount of waste that we create is reduced to a minimum.
Refills
Where possible buy goods in larger containers, instead of lot of small ones, or choose concentrates and refills.
Shopping bags
Every year in the UK the grocery industry uses enough carrier bags to carpet the globe twice! You could use cloth shopping bags or buy a bag for life instead.
Fruit and Veg
Buy your fruit and vegetables loose or in a bag that you can re-use, after all its you who pays for the excess packaging.
Nappies
Modern washable nappies are cheaper than ‘disposables’ and come in bright, funky designs without pins. Remember, a nappy is disposed of in a Devon landfill site every 1.1 seconds.
