South Hams District Council operates a bulky household and white goods waste collection, this service is chargeable. Items can be taken if they can reasonably be handled by one person, nothing heavier than 20KGs can be taken. We will only collect from domestic properties.
The items for collection will need to be outside in an accessible place on the day of collection.Our Operatives are not permitted to enter communal premises and households or to take any payments. Payment must be made in advance by telephone 01803 861234, in the mail or in person at our district offices, based in Totnes.
Bulky waste items that are not taken:
- Allotments and small holdings are not collected from
- House clearances and garden clearances are not undertaken
- Chemicals or asbestos
- Nothing too heavy for one man and a sack truck (nothing over 15 -20kgs)
- Double size garage doors
- Bricks, rubble, plaster, paint tins or builders waste
- Oil tanks or oil containers
- Motorbike, car parts, wheels or tyres
- Gas bottles
- Storage heaters due to asbestos risk
- Agas or Range Cookers
- Boilers
- Metal or cast iron baths
- Glass (Doors, Windows or Mirrors)
- Carpets longer than 6ft in length

- Furniture
- Beds and Mattresses
- Electrical items (including other white goods)
- Bagged or bundled garden waste

Timescales:
- Bulky Goods are collected within 10 working days from receipt of payment.
- White Goods are collected within 5 working days from receipt of payment.
This service needs to be pre-arranged and agreed in advance and this can be done by calling us on 01803 861234.
If you hire a private company to remove bulky waste, always ensure that they have a valid waste carriers licence.
Bulky waste can also be disposed of, free of charge at recycling centres or you can contact Refurnish to see if they will collect an item from you.
