Many householders have contacted us in Waste Services, through the recycling helpline or come to us in person at public events, with compliments and ideas to make it even easier for us all to recycle.
Some such comments were on making the kitchen caddy and brown bin cleaner and easier to use – so we’ve found a corn-starch caddy liner that is 100% compostable! Unlike degradable or biodegradable plastic liners, these liners will compost fully through our In-Vessel Composting process.
Unfortunately, not every ‘biodegradable’ liner available in the shops is entirely compostable in our composting process, so we’ve decided to accept only these liners so people can be sure the liners they’re using will compost fully. To distinguish between South Hams’ liners and others, those provided through South Hams District Council are a distinctive green colour and are marked with the council logo.
These liners are not considered an essential part of the scheme and householders can still wrap their food waste in paper, card or purchase paper sacks from external companies that have reached compostability standard. You may still want to continue to compost at home aswell.

These liners are not essential but for anyone who wants to buy some, they are available to order from the Recycling Helpline on: 01803 861199. A roll of 50 kitchen caddy liners costs £3.50 inc' postage, payable by card or cheque or £3.00 cash, card or cheque collecting from Follaton House, Totnes. (Please note that due to the nature of the liners' composition they have an approximate shelf life of 6 months and should be stored in a cool dark place). |
