With the new recycling system in place in the South Hams, it is important to minimise the risk of the unlikely event of flies or maggots in your rubbish.
To minimise the risk of the above:
- Wrap meat and fish waste tightly in newspaper before putting in the brown bin.
- If meat/fish is particularly problematic you can put wrapped food into cereal packet/cardboard box.
- Use garden waste (e.g. grass cuttings) or cardboard to cover the waste and act as a barrier to flies.
- Always keep the lid of your bin shut tightly.
- Use a caddy/wheeled bin liner in the caddy/wheeled bin. Available from West Country Worms.
- Line bottom of caddy/wheeled bin with newspaper/cardboard.
- Do not overfill your bin.
- Keep the bin out of direct sunlight, where possible.
- Keep your bin as clean as possible.

In the unlikely event that you have a problem with flies or maggots in your bin, where possible, wait for the waste to be collected and then:
- Wash your bin with either very hot soapy water, a diluted bleach solution or another proprietary disinfectant, and then
- Dispose of the liquid via the foul sewer e.g. down the gully serving your kitchen sink or a manhole.
Alternatively, if you need to deal with the problem while the bin is full certain fly sprays are available that will minimise any problems.
