Baiting Advice

Baiting Advice

If your property has been baited by our contractors they will have baited with poison bait. The contractors do not usually use breakback traps.

TheAdobe Acrobat Document -- will open in new browser window advice sheet will state what bait has been used on your property, but it will be either Difenacoum or Brodifenacoum.

Precautions

  • Do not let children, pets or other animals have access to baits
  • Avoid all contact by mouth
  • In case of accident contact a doctor of veterinary practitioner
  • Do not move or tamper with bait. Once the problem has been resolved, if there is any bait left over and it is easy to retrieve, you may remove the bait (washing your hands after use), put it in a plastic bag and dispose of it in the domestic refuse.
  • If you find a body make sure you wear gloves and wash your hands after handling. Put the body in a plastic bag and dispose of in the domestic rubbish
  • You may wish to let neighbours know that there is baiting/rodents in the area (especially if you have a shared roof space or garden).
  • On rare occasions rodents can die inside a house (between floor boards/loft spaces). The body can smell for two weeks or so, depending on various factors.  If it is not possible to retrieve the body you can use deodorisers to mask the smell, which are available from hardware stores.
  • If there is an on going problem or questions about proofing contact County Mole and Pest Control or if you require more advice please contact the Environmental Health Service.

In the event of emergency

If you think someone or an animal has eaten the bait please pass on the following information to your doctor or vet.

The product is a direct anticoagulant: Vitamin K1 (phylomenadione) is antidotal. In cases of suspected consumption of bait, determine prothrombin times not less than 18 hours after such consumption. If elevation has occurred, administer Vitamin K1 intravenously in divided doses 40mg for adults, 20mg for children, daily. Treatment may be required for a prolonged period. Withdraw antidote with care and monitor prothrombin times continuously for four days or more after such withdrawal.
