Remove the Habitat

Flat roofs, chimneys and other housing structures provide ideal locations for seagulls to nest.

The warmth shelter, space and absence of natural predators afforded in such locations form one of the primary reasons for the relocation of seagulls to the urban environment.

Netting

  • Consisting of strong weather proof plastic nets appropriately secured.
Primarily for building frontages and valleys.

Post and wire systems

  • Wire or strong monofilament stretched between steel posts that deter the gulls from roosting and nesting. Mainly used in a criss-cross pattern on flat roofs and along ridges.

The Spike System

  • Plastic or stainless steel prongs protruding vertically, at a slight angle, from a base strip. Usually pre-fabricated in standard strip and cut to the necessary dimensions. Ideal for ridges and smaller horizontal surfaces.

Potential Problems

Access

  • Access may be difficult or the height of the building may necessitate the use of scaffolding or other equipment.

Maintenance

  • Routine maintenance is required especially where netting and post and wire systems are used, otherwise birds will become trapped
