The Affordable Housing Development Plan Document (DPD) is an important document in the South Hams Local Development Framework (LDF). It sets out the Council's approach for delivering affordable housing in relation to new development. The Council published a Core Strategy and Policies, Issues and Preferred Options report – “The Strategy” – for comment in October 2004 and the Preferred Options stage was published in July 2007. Both these documents were available for comment over a six week period. A Submission stage version of the document was published for a final 6 week consultation from 25 January to 7 March 2008. An independent examination into the soundness of the Affordable Housing DPD was held in June 2008.
The Inspector's Report on the Affordable Housing DPD was received by the Council in August 2008. The changes to the submission version of the Affordable Housing DPD, specified in the report, are binding on the Council. The Council resolved to adopt the Affordable Housing DPD on 25 September 2008.

Sustainability Appraisal
The Affordable Housing DPD has been subject to a Sustainability Appraisal (SA), incorporating Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), at several stages during its preparation. A Sustainability Appraisal Report accompanies the Affordable Housing: Submission DPD which sets out the findings of the SA.
In his report, the Inspector found the Affordable Housing DPD "sound" subject to certain amendments, and considered that no further amendments to the SA report were required. Therefore, the final SA report reflects the appraisal at Submission stage.

This document is also available for public inspection at the Council offices, Follaton House, Totnes on Monday–Thursday 09:00–17:00 and Friday 09:00–16:30 and at the local libraries within the district.
