Systematically analyses the landscape to assist with understanding the individual components and groups of features that give rise to particular characteristics.  The assessment carefully considers the extent and condition of landscape features.

The assessment provides a useful starting point for setting the landscape scale context for any development within or adjacent to the South Devon area.  As such this work should be referred to and in most instances augmented with further detail that nests within this assessment at a scale that is commensurate with the development, project or site in question.

The assessment also serves as a useful guide in determining those landscape features and elements that contribute to landscape character within any part of the South Devon area.  Appropriate landscape management practices can then be identified to ensure that landscape character is maintained and strengthened where possible.
