Street Naming and Numbering
South Hams District Council is responsible for Street Naming and Numbering and allocation of official postal addresses for new developments throughout the district. We also try to resolve questions and queries from members of the public with regard to postal numbers and house names.
Street Naming and Numbering is a statutory function of the council carried out under some very old statutes: Section 65 of the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847, and Sections 17 and 18 of the Public Health Act 1925. Their purpose is to ensure clear naming of roads and naming and numbering of properties, both in existing towns and rural areas, and within new development sites. Obviously it is essential that properties can be located easily by the Emergency Services, visitors, the Royal Mail and other delivery organisations.
Please see the information under the menu item “Naming Your House” if you wish to change the number or name of your property. It’s your responsibility to put up a number or name outside your property so that people can find it.
Please see the information under the menu item “New Developments” if you are building or converting property which will require new addresses and post codes. We recommend you contact us to arrange this early on although we can not allocate an address until construction is under way.
From 1st April 2010 the Council has introduced charges for naming and numbering properties and naming, or re-naming, roads and streets. Please note payment is required at the time of your application. The charges are as follows:
(1) to change a house name, a charge of £21.00 per property;
(2) to allocate a street name to an unnamed street or change an existing street name, a charge of £37.00 per property;
(3) to name and number new developments, a charge of £36.00 per property be made;
