South Hams District Council is responsible for Street Naming and Numbering and allocation of postal codes for new developments throughout the district. We also try to resolve questions and queries from members of the public with regard to postal numbers and house names. Please see information under the section 'Naming Your House' if you wish to change the name of your property.
Street Naming and Numbering is a statutory function of the council to ensure clear naming of roads and numbering of properties within new development sites. It is considered essential, particularly to enable the rapid location of properties by the Emergency Services. It is advisable to contact the Council early on in the development so that the postal addresses can be finalised before occupation of the properties, this avoids confusion later on.
Consultation upon new road names between the Developers, the Parish/Town Council, the Royal Mail and various statutory bodies is coordinated and administered by the Council. Layout plans clearly identifying each plot and plot number are drawn up and a street numbering scheme is drafted.
When agreement has been reached regarding the road names the scheme is finalised and all interested parties including the Emergency Services are officially notified and the properties then added to their databases.
If you have a new development that needs official postal addresses please contact the Street Naming and Numbering Section on 01803 861234 for further information. |
