These web pages provide information on the local spatial planning that the Council is required to undertake to ensure the delivery of sustainable development across the South Hams. This includes the South Hams Local Development Framework (LDF) and saved policies from the South Hams Local Plan. Together these provide guidance on what kind of development and use of land will be permitted in the South Hams.

Site Allocations Development Plan Documents The five Site Allocation Development Plan Documents (DPDs) for Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Totnes and the Rural Areas have been submitted to the Secretary of State to commence the Examination. These documents identify sites for needed development of housing (especially affordable homes), employment and associated community facilities to 2016 and beyond. The five submitted DPDs, associated documents and representations are available to view here.

The Council has made good progress with its LDF portfolio and several documents are already adopted, including the:

• Development Policies Development Plan Document
• Sherford New Community Area Action Plan
• Affordable Housing Development Plan Document
• Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Document
• Open Space, Sport and Recreation Supplementary Planning Document
• Planning Obligations Supplementary Planning Document
• Statement of Community Involvement.

Other LDF documents currently in the course of preparation include the:

• Dartmouth Site Allocations Development Plan Document
• Ivybridge Site Allocations Development Plan Document
• Kingsbridge Site Allocations Development Plan Document
• Totnes Site Allocations Development Plan Document
• Rural Areas Site Allocations Development Plan Document
• Plymouth Urban Fringe Development Plan Document.

The LDF project plan (known as the Local Development Scheme) shows the timetable for the preparation of these documents and others whose preparation has yet to commence. It also shows which policies are saved from the Local Plan adopted in 1996. As new LDF documents are adopted they will replace the relevant sections of the adopted Local Plan.

The LDF and saved Local Plan policies are used to guide day to day development management and control decisions about planning applications and support good and consistent decisions.
