Totnes and District

The Totnes and District Market and Coastal Towns Initiative launched in 2002 and the Community Plan (2005) that developed out of the research and consultation is now led by the Totnes and District Community Strategy Group.

The Community Strategy Group comprises a mix of elected local representatives, interested local people and representatives from local organisations who are helping to deliver the community plan.

Strategic Objectives

  • Support local enterprise and the opportunities is creates
  • Actively conserve and enhance the areas unique identity
  • Work in partnership to deliver innovative housing solutions
  • Promote sustainability through example
  • Revitalise the River Dart as an economic, environmental and leisure resource
  • Encourage a community that is cohesive, inclusive and self sufficient
  • Develop strategies that strengthen the relationship between the town and it’s rural hinterland
  • Ensure that facilities, activities, services and new technologies are made available and accessible to all

Current Key Issues

Many projects and initiatives have evolved out of the community plan so far but the key issues at the moment are the improvement of facilities for young people, development of affordable housing in and around Totnes, improvements to community facilities available in the Civic Hall, dealing with Town traffic problems, renewable energy issues and branding and marketing Totnes better to promote sustainable tourism.

The Community Strategy Group is currently in the process of recruiting a consultant to undertake a review of all community projects, ideas and aspirations.
