Road Closure Signage

Road Closure Signage

Please comply with the following requirements:-

  1. We recommend you notify in writing, at least 7 days in advance of the event, owners of properties directly affected by the closure.
  2. You should place professional quality signs at each end of the proposed closure (see attached Appendix (b) on the day of the event, forewarning road users that a section of road will be closed.
  3. For the closure itself you must provide; erect; maintain and later remove all signs needed for the closure and diversion route (if applicable).  These will normally include signs located as follows:-
  • ROAD CLOSED (NO 1) at either end of section closed;
  • ROAD AHEAD CLOSED (NO 2) at junctions leading to the closure.  It is from these junctions that the diversion will be signed;
  • ACCESS ONLY (NO 3) with each No 1 and No 2 sign above where access to premises is still appropriate.

Where a diversion also needs to be signed, you will also need to arrange the following signs:-

  • DIVERSION (NO 4), with left or right hand arrows etc as appropriate to be placed at start of diversion along side No 2's above;
  • DIVERTED TRAFFIC (NO 5), with direction arrows, to be placed where diversion departs from main route, whether it be a left turn, right turn, or straight on;
  • DIVERSION ENDS (NO 6) to be provided if this is not otherwise obvious at each end of Diversion.

(All signs to accord with the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1981 ie they need to be professional and not rough home made versions of the signs).

YOU MUST SUBMIT A PLAN WITH YOUR APPLICATION SHOWING …..

(i) The section of road to be closed marked with big  X  X  X  s;
(ii) The alternative route marked with big   O  O  O  O  O  O s;
(iii) If HGVs could not use the O O O route, then show an alternative route for HGVs marked with big H   H   H   H s.
(iv) Mark on the plan the signs you propose to place.  Just mark sign number eg 2 on plan and draw a circle round it.  Draw arrow to point to the position it will be placed;
(v) PROVIDE statement explaining which sequence the signs will be placed out in, this should normally be the reverse order eg all 6’s etc and the No1’s last;
(vi) Think about the closure from the drivers point of view.  Do you need any special signs to make it clear what they need to do.  If so number specials 8, 9, 10 etc and provide a schedule showing the wording you intend, and mark on plan as in 4 above. (If a separate route for HGVs is needed you will need some special signs).
