The varied landscape and wildlife are one of the South Hams’ principal assets.
Ranging from windswept coastal plateaus through to narrow valleys along the fringes of Dartmoor, the South Hams benefits from a wide range of landscapes and habitats.
Over centuries the impacts of farming, settlement, transport and industry have sculpted the natural landform to create the landscape we know and cherish today.
Much of the Council’s work involves the protection of this distinctive environment, the creation of new landscapes and the promotion of appropriate access so that everyone can enjoy the South Hams.
