Since 1869 the R.N.L.I. have had a lifeboat stationed in Salcombe. Crewed almost entirely by volunteers the present lifeboat, an all-weather tyne class “The Baltic Exchange II” is complimented by an inshore atlantic 75 class “Joan Bates”.
Both boats are kept very busy especially during the summer season. Recent shore works have provided an alongside pontoon for the all-weather lifeboat and a purpose built boathouse and slipway for the inshore lifeboat, improving response times tenfold. There is also a museum and souvenir shop next to the boathouse.
