Helpful Hints For the general enjoyment and safety of residents and visitors

- You should not motor at the maximum permitted speed of 8 knots unless well clear of all slipways, pontoons, landings and beaches. Remember, toddler’s arms and legs can easily be broken by the violent movement of their dinghy by your wash. In the Batson Creek channel the maximum speed should be below 4 knots.
- Sailboards should be used in the creeks where it is less crowded, the water is warmer and the current is weaker. They should be kept clear of swimmers and main navigable channels.
- The Harbourmaster's staff patrol in easily identifiable launches. These boats are all equipped with VHF radios to communicate with each other, the Harbour office and, if necessary, the Coastguard. They are there for information, security and safety of the boat and estuary users.
- Please ensure that your boat or dinghy clearly displays it’s name and Harbour license disc. When ashore it should be parked in its allocated space or clear of public access.
- Try to rig / de-rig your dinghy or prepare your boat before you get to slipway. This keeps the slipways clear and prevents short tempers.
- The Harbour Authority wishes to keep the estuary as a place of quiet and peaceful enjoyment, and certain controls and limits are now imposed at North and South Sands and the Boat parks, due to public pressure and usage. Therefore, your co-operation is needed
- Swimming across harbour fairways is prohibited in accordance with Salcombe Harbour Byelaws.
- It is requested that all helmsmen act with common sense and display good seamanship, thus enabling everyone to enjoy their sailing.
