Council Services

South Hams District Council has a turnover of in excess of £30 million each year. This money is raised from:-

  • Central Government Grants
  • Council Tax
  • Investment Income
  • Car Parking Fees and Other Charges
  • Industrial Unit Rents

The following Council services are either self-financing or produce a surplus to enable either other services to be financed or the Council Tax to be reduced.

  • Car and Boat Parking
  • Dartmouth Lower Ferry
  • Employment Estates
  • Pannier Markets
  • Salcombe Harbour
  • Local Land Charges

The Council has one of the lowest Council Taxes in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. The average Council Tax for 2001/2002 for a Band D property is £875.60 of which £699.93 goes to Devon County Council, £61.81 goes to the Devon and Cornwall Police Authority and £22.52 goes to Town and Parish Councils. ONLY £91.34 goes to this Council, although we have to bear all the costs of administering and collecting the tax.

The provision of the Council’s services is greatly dependent upon the successful collection of the Council Tax and this Council had collected around 97% of Council Tax due.
