CPA started in 2002 as a way of reviewing the performance of a Council. Performance is judged on four themes:
- What is the council trying to achieve?
- How has the council set about delivering its priorities?
- What has the council achieved/not achieved to date?
- In light of what the council has learned to date, what does it plan to do next?
Councils are inspected by a team from the Audit Commission and are put into one of five categories: Poor; Weak; Fair; Good and Excellent. South Hams District Council was reviewed in 2003 and the Inspectors rated us as an Excellent authority. We do, however, recognise that doesn’t mean we are perfect! The inspection not only pointed out things we do well, but it also drew attention to things we could definitely do better.
As a result we now have a
Corporate Improvement Plan which is aimed at improving what we do over the next three years.
Unless the present system changes, we will be due for another inspection in 2007. By this time we will be expected to show improvement in the weaker areas highlighted in 2003.
