Salcombe is the most southerly seaside town in Devon and its sheltered waters at the mouth of the Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary make it one of the South West's best loved sailing centres. Salcombe has everything from beaches, coastal walks and water sports to interesting shops, tucked away in side streets, and wide choice of pubs and restaurants. The Salcombe Maritime Museum will step you back in time to the days of smugglers, ship builders and fast schooners. The busy marine town is still home to a sizeable fishing fleet.
Salcombe's mild climate is due to its southerly location, sheltered from the prevailing winds by rolling countryside. It sits, nestled on the edge of a ria coastline of flooded ancient river valleys, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, amid award winning beaches and Heritage Coast. The town is the area centre for the surrounding village communities of Thurlestone, Hope Cove, Bolberry and Soar while East Portlemouth, on the other side of the ria known as the Kingsbridge Estuary, is only a short passenger ferry ride away.
The mild climate allows citrus trees to bear fruit in some gardens along the estuary. Local producers take advantage of the climate to grow a range of foods from traditional seasonal vegetables to grape vines and chilli peppers. Many local restaurants use this produce along with freshly caught fish and shellfish from the coast around Salcombe - offering a truly local dining experience.
