A Theatre Licence will be required under the Theatres Act 1968 where premises are used for the performance of plays.

The Act defines "premises" to include any place, so a licence will be needed for even outdoor performances.

The Act defines "plays" to include any dramatic piece given wholly or in part by one or more persons present and performing but also any ballet.

Licences can be granted for one occasion or annually. If an occasional licence is granted for a charitable or educational purpose then no fee is chargeable, but the Council must make a charge for annual licences.

However, this Council will only charge community premises, such as village halls, £30.00 for an annual licence. When a licence is granted it will be issued with conditions which are related to Public Entertainment Licence conditions to ensure the safety of the public and performers.

These licences are shortly to be superseded by new Premises Licences under the Licensing Act 2003.
