Do I have to complete a new direct debit mandate each year?

No, for most people this is the simplest method of payment. By completing one mandate, we will notify you of the amounts and dates payment will be taken, and whilst you leave the instruction `active' your bank will pay those amounts direct to us. However you can cancel this instruction with your bank at any time.

I believe my bill is too high, can I do anything about it?

Yes, you can appeal to the Valuation Office. This procedure is relatively simple and free. Whilst they are considering your appeal, you will need to pay the Business Rates based on your most recent bill. If the appeal is successful your overpayment (if there is one) will be refunded to you, and if you haven't been issued a summons (for non-payment) you will also receive interest on that overpayment.

What happens if I can't pay by the date due?

Contact us, if we are aware that there is a problem, we may be able to assist.

A company have offered to deal with my appeal for me, is it worth taking them on?

This decision is one that we cannot help you with. The only advice we can give is that appealing direct to the Valuation Office is free, and an appeal will not be guaranteed to be successful and may even lead to an increase! If the appeal is successful and the rateable value reduced, it does not necessarily follow that you will have overpaid or will be due a refund - contact us if you wish to know more.

Remember: We are here to help you and give assistance on your Business Rates.
