Can't pay? What happens next?

If you have difficulties paying an instalment on time please contact us as we may be able to help. If you tell us early enough we may be able to re-schedule instalments. But, please remember, there are no magic solutions – the debt will have to be paid. And because Business Rates is a national tax, we have to pay over to the government what we should have, rather than what we actually, collected. The cost of borrowing any shortfall falls on South Hams Council Tax payers.

If you want to know what will happen if you don’t contact us and don’t pay, go to the list on the left to see details on the different stages of the recovery process and what they mean.

Some of the actions available to us to recover Business Rates debts can have serious consequences for you, and we will always carefully consider our options before taking enforcement action. But again, if you are having difficulty paying on time, please contact us at the earliest possible opportunity.  Or visit the National Debtline website for free confidential and independent advice on how to deal with debt problems.
