Arts & culture play an important role in the vibrancy and prosperity of the South Hams.  With a world famous arts college at Dartington, hundreds of artists living in the area and a thriving local arts scene the South Hams has long been at the forefront of contemporary arts and culture. in the region

The following statistics give a flavour of the strength of arts and culture in the South Hams:

- 216 of the 540 artists registered with the the Devon Artists Network are from the South Hams. (Devon Artists Network website – Dec 2005)

- 350 of the 500 artists registered with Devon Arts Culture are from the South Hams

- Within Devon, the South Hams has the highest number of employees in the creative sector after the urban areas of Plymouth, Exeter & Torbay. (Devon Creative Industries Research – Oct 2005)

- The South Hams has the highest number of visual artists in Devon (Devon Creative Industries Research – Oct 2005)

- The South Hams had 51 venues and 65 exhibiting artists in the 2005 Nine Days of Art event – more than any other district.
